My Fellow Accountants
As we observe International Women's Day under the theme "Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress," I am honored to address you as the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Caribbean. This theme resonates deeply with our profession, as investing in women not only accelerates progress within our organizations but also fosters economic growth, societal advancement and a better world. According to UN Women at the current rate of investments, more than 340 million women and girls will still live in extreme poverty by 2030.
A number of areas have been identified for accelerating progress. They include access to financial resources, employment that provides equal pay, equity for unpaid care and domestic work, removal of threats to security and human rights.
Investing in women is a strategic imperative for driving innovation, enhancing competitiveness, and promoting sustainable development. Research has consistently shown that organizations with diverse leadership teams outperform their peers, demonstrating the tangible benefits of embracing gender equality.
In the Caribbean, women have long played a vital role in shaping the landscape and success of the accounting profession. Their resilience, intellect, and dedication have propelled our field forward and enriched our communities. From pioneering leaders who paved the way for future generations to the countless women who diligently work behind the scenes, providing operational support, our profession is enriched by the diverse perspectives and talents of our women.
Today, as we celebrate the achievements of women around the globe, let us also acknowledge the progress that has been made towards gender equality in our field. However, let us not forget that there is still much work to be done, as despite their invaluable contributions, women still face barriers to full participation and representation within our profession at leadership positions.
For those of us in leadership positions, we must continue to strive for greater representation of women in those positions, promote equal opportunities for career advancement, and a work environment that is inclusive and supportive of all individuals, regardless of gender. By creating a supportive and inclusive environment where women are valued, respected, and empowered to succeed, we not only accelerate progress within our organizations but also contribute to building a more just society for all.
I wish to take this opportunity to recognize the contributions of women regardless of the nature of the work that they do. Let us not forget women who are subject to extreme laws that deprive them of basic human rights, such as a right to education and security.
Let us all embrace and take action towards meeting the UN sustainable development goal of achieving gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls Together, let us reaffirm our commitment to investing in women and harnessing the full potential of every individual, regardless of gender. Whether it is through mentoring and supporting female colleagues, advocating for policies that accelerate women’s economic empowerment and inclusion, or leading by example in your own career, each of us has the power to effect positive change.
By doing so, we not only enrich the lives of women but also create a brighter and more prosperous future.
Happy International Women's Day!
